In this episode of JUNG ON PURPOSE, Debra Maldonado and Dr. Rob explore the distinction between ego-driven and soul-driven purpose, drawing on Jungian psychology. They discuss the role of the ego in shaping our identity and how it can both serve and hinder our true purpose. Understand the process of individuation, the importance of shadow work and the journey to living authentically beyond societal expectations.

If you want to become a life coach and wonder how you can help others, listen to our recent JUNG ON PURPOSE podcast episode (previously named Soul Sessions) to explore how our unique Jungian coaching model is the future of coaching.

Seeking your true purpose involves more than just changing your outer life. You can leave your corporate job to find a meaningful career, but that only changes the outer circumstances.

If you do not do the inner work of change, you are just creating a new Persona still limited by your ego and past.

To be aligned in your true purpose, you must either undergo the process of Individuation or the journey within to uncover your true Self, according to Carl Jung.

What’s the difference?

Early in life you learn to adapt to survive, both physically and socially, and you develop a sense of “I” or ego so caught up in fear, security and safety that you are afraid to truly live. The ego continues to control your choices in life until you become aware that there is more to you than just your surface personality.

You can step into a helping career that makes you feel like you are making the world a better place, but the ego will make all of your efforts about you. You’ll feel regret and guilt when criticized or pride and glory when praised, clinging to the surface mask of the personality instead of your true Self.

In the next episode of JUNG ON PURPOSE, Purpose & Ego: A Jungian Exploration, we explore the distinction between ego-driven and soul-driven purpose, drawing on Jungian psychology. We discuss the role of the ego in shaping our identity and how it can both serve and hinder our true purpose. Understand the process of individuation, the importance of shadow work and the journey to living authentically beyond societal expectations.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • How the Ego serves as the captain of the conscious mind, providing identity, but not the true Self
  • The deeper workings of Individuation and transcending the Ego to discover one’s true purpose
  • Why Shadow Work is essential for freeing oneself from Ego-driven patterns
  • The meaning of true purpose, why it’s not found externally and how it’s encoded within the psyche
  • Steps to living authentically and how it requires courage to face the unknown and societal pressures
