Transcending Pain as the Wounder Healer
Many of us step onto the path of personal growth or become coaches, therapists, or healers after facing our own pain. The “wounded healer” is a compelling archetype—someone who has been through suffering and channels that experience to help others. Dr. Rob and Debra explore why this story resonates so deeply, especially in the world of therapy, coaching, and personal development.
If you want to become a life coach and wonder how you can help others, listen to our recent Soul Sessions podcast episode to explore how our unique Jungian coaching model is the future of coaching.
Some embrace the title “wounded healer” and wear it like a badge, but unconsciously it can tether you to the past. Past pain, past relationships, past healing defines you even if you feel you have healed your so-called wounds.
Many people come to the work of therapy or coaching because they have experienced pain. They had someone come to help them with the pain and get inspired to help others. This is a great thing.
Some help stops there, at the first level of growth.
In the Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna there are four ways people seek help:
- Heal Pain
- Create Something New
- Learn Higher Knowledge
- Gain Wisdom
A good self-test to see if you are beyond the first level is to ask yourself how often you relate to the past. Do you still hold resentments and are still “working on” your childhood or relationship with your parents. There is nothing wrong with being at step one, we all start there!
There is more though. There is a time when you can let it all go and step into the real you. The you that your Soul has in mind.
