Guilt is something we all feel.
Often misread as the mistakes we’ve made or regrets we have, the feeling of guilt can hold us back from full self-expression.
From an evolutionary perspective, guilt helped us maintain group harmony and avoid rejection. Our parents punished us when we acted out and tried to cultivate a moral compass for our behaviors to help us fit in with society.
Without guilt, the moral compass breaks down. However, if we allow it to direct our life, we end up pleasing everyone but ourselves.
Sometimes we feel guilty about the boundaries we set, a perfectly normal response. This guilt is our ego trying to pull us back to old behaviors feeding us fears that the other person will be mad or abandon us.
If you act with your own self-interest in mind, you will feel guilt, but that is not a reason to return to old ways. Allow the guilt to be there as a reminder you are stepping outside of your comfort zone.
If we examine that guilt, we can learn from it; we can see it from a new perspective and understand the mechanisms of how it works to hold us back in life. Once we make that conscious, we are free to choose.
Ask yourself: “How has guilt controlled my behaviors and limited my life?”
In our new Soul Sessions: A Jungian Coaching Podcast episode, Transforming Guilt: a Path to Free Self-Expression, we explore the complex emotion of guilt. We discuss its evolutionary purpose, the neuroscience behind it and the distinction between moral and existential guilt.
Find out how guilt can be used as a mechanism for personal growth and transformation and the importance of understanding one’s shadow. Learn about the spiritual aspects of guilt and how it relates to non-duality, emphasizing that guilt does not define one’s identity.
The episode concludes with a reflection on how to acknowledge and work with guilt in a constructive way.
